Library News: June 28th, 2024

Dear Reader:

Oh, happy days! We are freshly past the longest day of the year.  Graduation has taken place.  We are on the cusp of so many things.  Canada Day is almost upon us and with that comes the Canada Day Parade in Binscarth.  Russell & District Regional Library has two libraries.  One is located right on Main Street in Binscarth.  This year, The Library Ladies will, once again, be joining Binscarth’s Canada Day Parade: smiling, waving, throwing candies to onlookers and flaunting the banner by Art Barn which reminds everyone that “You Need to Read!”  If you haven’t been to Binscarth, you should go! Binscarth is a village with the heart of a lion.  Binscarth has a school, churches, a bank, a post office, two restaurants, a grocery store, a gas station, parks, a swimming pool, a museum, a golf course, a drop-in centre, a skating rink, and an enormous slide that can make even the most stoic among us gasp and squeal as momentum gathers and one comes zooming down.

For the months of July and August, Binscarth Library is hosting A Story Time & Crafts event every Tuesday afternoon from 2-3 PM and, every Thursday, from 12-2 PM, Binscarth Library hosts a Hot Dog Sale.  Please visit our website and keep an eye out for posters around town with details.

For the months of July and August, Russell Library will be closed on Saturdays.

Did you know that the song “O Canada” was originally commissioned by Lieutenant Governor of Quebec Theodore Robitaille for the 1880 Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day ceremony; Calixa Lavallee composed the music, after which French-language words were written by the poet and judge Sir Adolphe-Basile Routhier.  In 1908, Robert Stanley Weir wrote the English-language lyrics.

I

O Canada! Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise, The True North strong and free!
From far and wide, O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee, O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

II

O Canada! Where pines and maples grow.
Great prairies spread and lordly rivers flow.
How dear to us thy broad domain,
From East to Western sea.
Thou land of hope for all who toil!
Thou True North, strong and free!

III

O Canada! Beneath thy shining skies
May stalwart sons, and gentle maidens rise,
To keep thee steadfast through the years
From East to Western sea.
Our own beloved native land!
Our True North, strong and free!

IV

Ruler Supreme, who hearest humble prayer,
Hold our Dominion within thy loving care;
Help us to find, O God, in thee
A lasting, rich reward,
As waiting for the better day,
We ever stand on guard.
