Library News: May 17, 2024

Dear Reader:

May 8th, 9th, and 10th in the wind up to Mother’s Day on May 12 were eventful for both Binscarth and Russell Library.  On Wednesday, May 8th, Marni Fingas hosted a Paint Night in the Russell Library Gallery. A lovely group of folks gathered to paint their collective hearts out. The Paint Night started at 6:30 PM and ran until 9:45 PM, due to the meticulous nature of the painters and the good time being shared by all.  We are already planning to have another Paint Event.  Next time, we’ll call it Paint Afternoon and have it on a Saturday.  Thank you, Marni, and thank you to all who participated.

Thursday, May 9th at Binscarth, Library,  from 11:30 AM – 2:00 PM, we kicked off Hot Dog Sale Season.  A special thanks to Board Chair, Estha Baseley, for lending a hand.  There were times when it took three of us keep the line moving.  True to form, Binscarthians turned out in full force, so to speak.  Per capita, Binscarth sales exceed Russell every time.  Dear Binscarthians, we love you!

Friday, May 10th at Russell Library we had another barn burner of a sale.  The Hot Dog Sale was set to run from 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM.  Just before 11:00, Harold rolled by with his red-hot scooter and started us off in style with his purchase of a dog and a drink.  There was a minute or two when we worried that no-one else was going to come and then, the rush was on.  By 1:00 PM we were sold out of hot dogs.  Thank you Russellites! What an amazing day it was.  Sun-shiny and friendly. A delightful prelude to Summer Sales: Hot Dog Sales and Farmer’s Market begin in the first week of June.

The Russell Hot Dog Sale was over at 1:00 PM and at 4:30 PM the draw for Mother’s Day Raffle Basket took place.  Winner:  Sherry Fraser.  Congratulations, Sherry!  Thank you to everyone that purchased a ticket.

While Libraries are said to be free, we all know that nothing in life is free.  For every “free” service there is an army of folks working and paying to maintain the illusion.  Every time someone buys a hot dog, a drink, a bag of popcorn, a ticket, an annual membership, (for those outside the Municipality), that someone is somebody great.  Your support of the Russell & District Regional Library means the world to those of us that work here and sit on The Board as well as those of us that frequent the Russell~Binscarth Libraries.  Please note, a $50.00 Annual Library Membership is what 2 new books at Chapters would cost.  A package of cigarettes is $25.00, a decent bottle of wine is $20.00.  The books, services, and entertainment available to all at your local library are priceless.
