Library News: October 20, 2023

Dear Reader:

On Wednesday, October 11, 2023, Amy & Ed kicked off our events season at the Russell & District Regional Library with an evening dedicated to the songs of John Prine.  The concert began at 6:30 pm and ended around 9:00 pm after two glorious forty-five-minute sets.  Amy’s sweet and airy voice complements Ed’s gravely tones and, together, the two of them paid great homage to the memory of John Prine and his music in their John Prine tribute evening at the Library Gallery.

Wednesday, October 18, 2023, was our first Open Mic Night in a long time, it was incredible. Once again, the room was alive with a creative, friendly and supportive energy.  Poetry and short stories were shared and enjoyed, culminating in the group creation of our short story, (to be shared in our next article).  Mind you, at the time of writing this article, October 18th has not happened yet.  At the time of publication of this newspaper, October 18th’s Open Mic Night will be a thing of the past.  Through the avenue of artistic license and faith, I bring to you an account of Wednesday’s Open Mic Night.  If Open Mic Night sounds like something you or someone you know might be interested in, we plan to host Open Mic Night in the Russell Library Gallery on the third Wednesday of every month.  The next Open Mic Night will be in the Russell Library Gallery, beginning at 6:30 pm on November 15th.  If you or someone you know are/is a writer or a reader, please come on out and share something you’ve written or something someone else has written.  The only rules are that you present for no longer than seven minutes and come with the intention of having a groovy time.  You never know when a fledgling open mic performer could be a future New York Times best seller.

On this upcoming Wednesday, October 25th, it’s an evening with Oscar winner, Jan Murray in the Russell Library Gallery, beginning at 6:30 pm. Jan Murray is, currently, a citizen of Russell, Mb., but, when one sits down with her for even just a few minutes, one gets the sense that Jan has maybe even travelled the word and been a citizen of many places in her long life. Jan Murray is a born storyteller, out of a time when people got together, visited and entertained one another with stories in conversation as opposed to Instagram stories. Jan Murray is sure please with her stories.  You’ll only know the story behind her Oscar if you come on out and join us at the Russell Library Gallery on October 25, at 6:30 pm.  Make the trip, bring your children.  You won’t regret it, I promise.
