Dear Reader:
Happy Friday!
On Friday, July 28th the Russell branch of Russell & District Regional Library held it’s weekly Friday Hot Dog Sale and Farmer’s Market. This Friday, however, it was Hot Dogs and Market with a twist! We were thrilled to welcome Lorne Pettitt, violinist extraordinaire. Born on July 14th, 1937, Lorne Pettitt is a modest man with a kind smile, strong handshake, and enormous talent. Mr. Pettitt has been playing the violin since he was fifteen years old. When asked who taught him to play, Lorne admits that, while he did receive some outside instruction along the way, he is primarily self-taught: “You have to have an ear for music, and I was always listening to records and radio,” says Pettitt. Mr. Pettitt is a Violinist in the Russell Pelly Trail Band: the Russell Pelly Trail Band has been playing together for approximately eight years.
Lorne Pettitt was born and raised in the Russell area and has been married to his wife, Marlene, for 62 years. Marlene and Lorne have three children and four grandchildren. Marlene and Lorne’s children’s names are Murray, Bev, and Mark. Lorne worked for Manitoba Highways for many years and he and his wife and family worked a mixed farming operation for years as well.
While Lorne is well known in the community, and The Russell Pelly Trail Band plays weddings, dances, Nursing Homes, anniversaries etc., it is not every day that our Hot Dog Sale and Farmer’s Market enjoys a solo performance by the likes of Mr. Lorne Pettitt. Thank you, Mr. Pettit.t
Russell Library hopes to host the music of the entire Russell Pelly Trail Band ensemble before this year’s Hot Dog Sale and Farmer’s Market season draws to a close.
