Happy day to you from Russell & District Regional Library. On July 1st, both the Russell Library branch and Binscarth Library branch librarians joined together on the back of the Russell—Binscarth Library : “You need to read!” float in Celebration of Canada Day. Your small-town librarians were smiling, waving, and wishing onlookers “Happy Canada Day” as they tossed Maynards candies to thrilled children while live bagpipe music was played by a real live marching bagpipe band! Only on Canada Day in the Binscarth Parade can a handful of librarians have such a good time. We plan to make the Binscarth Parade an annual tradition. Here’s hoping the Bagpipers do too!
On June 28th, the Russell Library Hosted a Filipino Fiesta Block Party. We had permission from the Town to block traffic flow between Westbourne and Darcy streets so that people could dance in the street, literally. And, yes, there were people dancing Zumba in the street and singing Karaoke on the sidewalk and there were lineups down the sidewalk for the variety of Filipino food available to well over one hundred revellers. The Filipino Fiesta was the brainchild of Pauline Olarte and Christine Podollan. Pauline was interested in finding a space for the Filipino Community of Russell/Binscarth to throw a party as a kind of thank you to Russell/Binscarth for welcoming them with open arms and Christine was interested in making the Russell Library Green Space available for just such an event. Very thankfully, the resulting party was wonderfully successful. Hopefully the only difference between this year’s Filipino Fiesta and next year’s will be the increase in people dancing in the street and Filipino Food Stands. Oh, and by the way, inside the Library was a very festive ambiance as well: Children and adults alike were bustling with enthusiasm over books and the happy sounds and sights seen and heard around them.
On Friday, June 30th, the Russell Library Farmer’s Market and Hotdog Sale took place as usual and, slowly but surely, more Farmer’s Market vendors are coming to share their wares. The Hotdog sale was a Hotdog sale with a twist as we ventured into the world of Cheeseburgers for the first time. Thank you to everyone that continues to support the Library Farmer’s Market and Hotdog sales. All Proceeds from the Hotdog Sales in Russell and Binscarth go to the Russell and District Regional Library. Thank you to all the Hotdog & Cheesburger Lovers alike1
