Crossroads This Week: April 7, 2023

In last week’s issue, Open Mic Night was mentioned with much hope for the future.  It is with gratitude that Russell & District Library, Russell Location, can share with you the good news of the groovy time had by all.  Special guests Isabel Wendel, and Donna Simard shared some of their work, respectively, alongside a number of other participants. We had such a lovely time laughing and listening.  As a group, we also wrote the following story.  Join us at our next Open Mic Night and you too can become a published author.

Bears in Space

Once upon a time, far off into the future, Christine, the manager, noticed that there was more and more trash and garbage everywhere she looked.  She decided to do something about it so she called her astronaut friend to explain the problem.

Astronauts always have the answer!  But, what do astronauts know about trash?  Keep it out of orbit, recycle it, recycle it in orbit?

Astronauts need to grow a garden to live in space.  Containers are pots and leftovers make compost.

And it is outer-space spring!  Flowers or vegetables?  Vegetables are very popular in space, and on earth, but, not with young kids.  What to do?

We have a storage facility for compost.  Bears could get into it, space bears?

Let the bears eat the compost.  They’ll help solve the garbage problem and ease into a long winter’s nap.

But, I digress.  What do we do about the bears?  They need a distraction.

On the next Open Mic, we should invite them so that the children could read to them as a distraction.

Christine, the manager decided that  this was a great idea.  She invited children from everywhere.

And it was a marvelous time for everyone.

They learned how to recycle in space, grow gardens, make compost in zero gravity.  But, most importantly, they learned how to read to bears in space.
