Dear Reader,

The Russell & District Library is pleased to welcome Christine Podollan, Library Manager, to the team.  Christine loves people, books, the Arts.  Libraries and gardens are two of her favorite places on earth.  In the fullness of time, Christine is looking forward to meeting everyone in the community and surrounding areas. Please, come on in to the Library in Russell and/or Binscarth and say hello again.  The Library is your Library, a cornerstone of your respective communities.  We look forward to welcoming you, every time you come.

February is the shortest month of the year and, it’s plumb full of delightful reasons to come on down to the Library.

This month is I Love to Read Month  and Black History Month.  February 4th is Take Your Child to The Library Day, February 5th – 11th is Children’s Authors and Illustrators Week, February 9th is Read in The Bathtub Day.

February 4-11 in History:

February 4th 1985 – Twenty countries in the United Nations signed a document called “Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.”

Birthdays:

American inventor Thomas Edison (1847-1931) was born in Milan, Ohio.  Throughout his life, he acquired over 1200 patents including the incandescent bulb, phonograph and movie camera.  Best known for his quote, “Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration.”

British novelist Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was born in Portsmouth, England.  He examined social inequalities in his works:  David Copperfield, Oliver Twist, Nicholas Nickleby.  In 1843, he wrote A Christmas Carol” in just a few. Weeks.
